MacroFactor alternative: who should switch, and who should stay

Short answer: if MacroFactor's weekly check ins and adaptive targets are why you use it, stay, because Logma has nothing like them. If you're leaving because you want a free app, Logma won't solve that either, since it has no free version. If you're leaving because logging takes too long or scanned entries keep coming out wrong, Logma lets you say the whole meal in one sentence, and the yearly plan is $49.99 after a 3 day free trial.

Logma logs a meal in 3 seconds. Say it or type it, it counts it. 3 days free on the yearly plan.

Start 3 days free

MacroFactor has a loyal following. On the US App Store it has 4.8 stars from 23,730 ratings, and its main idea is a smart one: it estimates your energy expenditure, notices when your metabolism shifts, and adjusts your calorie and macro targets at weekly check ins based on what you log.

So when someone searches for a MacroFactor alternative, it's rarely because the coaching failed them. It's usually the subscription, or the daily work of logging. Those are two different problems with different fixes, and one of them Logma doesn't fix at all.

Quick disclosure: I'm Batu, and I build Logma, an iPhone calorie tracker you talk to. I'm biased, so everything about MacroFactor below comes from its own App Store listing or from reviews there, linked at the bottom.

How it logs in Logma

“A cup of 2% Greek yogurt with a scoop of whey, half a cup of blueberries and a tablespoon of peanut butter.”

Example: Logma splits this into the yogurt, the whey, the blueberries and the peanut butter, and logs about 420 kcal with macros.

Why people leave MacroFactor in 2026

Of the newest 1 and 2 star reviews on the US App Store we read in November 2026 (129 reviews), about 33% mention the paywall. A review can mention several things, so the shares overlap.

  • The paywall, about 33%. MacroFactor is a paid app that starts with a 7 day trial, and these reviews are about needing to pay at all. One reviewer says they only found out after filling in a long setup.
  • Wrong food data, about 16%. Entries that don't match the label. One App Store review describes a scanned protein shake with "106g of protein logged when the shake said 30g".
  • Charged after the trial, can't cancel, refunds, about 15%.
  • The barcode scanner, about 13%. One reviewer says it worked well at first but has been off since recent updates, so they're back to entering food by hand.
  • The price, about 12%.
  • Sync, Apple Health and login, about 6%, and crashes or bugs, about 5%.

Ads barely register at about 3%, which fits: MacroFactor describes itself as ad free. Some of the newest reviews also ask the team to stop changing the layout between updates.

Put together, the reasons split into two groups. Money (paywall, trial charges, price) and friction (wrong entries, a scanner that misreads, fixing things by hand). Logma helps with the second group. With the first it only helps on price: it costs less per year on listed prices, but it isn't free.

MacroFactor vs Logma

MacroFactor details come from its US App Store listing as of November 4, 2026.

MacroFactor Logma
How you log Search a verified food database, scan a barcode or use custom foods Say or type the meal in one normal sentence
Where the food data comes from MacroFactor's verified food database No database to scroll. Each item is estimated from what you said
Targets and coaching An algorithm adjusts your calorie and macro targets at weekly check ins No coaching
What it tracks Calories, macros and detailed micronutrient breakdowns Calories and macros
Ads None, it describes itself as ad free No ads
Free version No, it starts with a 7 day trial No. The yearly plan starts with a 3 day free trial
Price The App Store lists monthly plans from $9.99 to $11.99, a semiannual plan at $47.99, annual plans from $59.99 to $71.99 and an annual bundle at $89.99 $9.99 a month or $49.99 a year
Turkish interface No Yes, English and Turkish
Best for Targets that adjust themselves, plus detailed data Logging a meal in seconds, without needing a coach in the app

On listed prices, Logma's yearly plan costs less than any of MacroFactor's annual options, but neither app is free. The App Store shows more than one price for the same kind of MacroFactor plan, so compare against the price you actually see inside the app.

How logging works in Logma

Logma replaces the search, scan and adjust loop with one sentence. Tap the mic and say what you ate, or type it:

"200 grams of chicken thigh, a cup of white rice and a side salad with a tablespoon of olive oil."

Logma splits that into items, estimates each one and logs calories, protein, carbs and fat in about 3 seconds. If you track macros you probably know your weights, so say them. When you don't, describe the portion in normal words.

A few honest differences if you're coming from MacroFactor:

  • There's no verified database entry behind each item. Logma estimates from what you said. That's fast and works for home cooking and restaurant plates with no label, but it isn't the same as picking an exact branded product.
  • There's no barcode scanner and no photo logging.
  • There's no adaptive coaching. If you want to work out a target yourself, the calorie calculator and the TDEE guide are a good start, and the protein per kg guide covers protein.

What you get instead is speed. The extras you'd normally skip, like the oil in the pan, the sauce or the second spoon of peanut butter, take a few words to add, so they actually get logged. More on that in why fast logging sticks.

When MacroFactor is the better choice

MacroFactor does things Logma doesn't try to do. Keep it if any of these matter to you:

  • You want a coach in the app. Its algorithm estimates your energy expenditure and adjusts your calorie and macro targets every week. Logma has no coaching.
  • You don't always hit your targets. MacroFactor says its adjustments still work when you go over, and that it shows no warnings or red numbers when you do.
  • You want micronutrients. It lists detailed breakdowns of micronutrients as well as macros. Logma tracks calories and macros.
  • You scan a lot of packaged food. MacroFactor has a barcode scanner and custom foods.
  • You like the extras. A period tracker, a habit tracker, data insights and charts are all in its listing.

If those are what you use, the subscription is probably worth keeping, and a faster logger won't replace them. For a wider look, see my comparison of calorie tracking apps in 2026.

How to switch and cancel without being charged again

About 15% of the low reviews we read were about trial charges, cancelling or refunds, so do it in this order. If you pay for MacroFactor through the App Store:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions.
  2. Tap MacroFactor and choose Cancel Subscription. If you're still inside the 7 day trial, cancel at least a day before it ends. Apple's steps are here.
  3. Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription.
  4. If MacroFactor isn't in that list, you probably paid on its website, and you cancel it there.
  5. If you were charged for something you didn't mean to buy, ask Apple for a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple explains how here.

Then start Logma's yearly plan with its 3 day free trial and log your usual meals for those three days. Compare the numbers with what MacroFactor showed for the same meals. If they look sane, keep going. If not, cancel in the same Subscriptions screen before the trial ends.

FAQ

Is there a free MacroFactor alternative?

Logma isn't one. It has no free version, and the yearly plan starts with a 3 day free trial, then costs $49.99 a year. MacroFactor isn't free either, it starts with a 7 day trial. If you need an app you never pay for, look for one with a free version.

Does Logma adjust my calories like MacroFactor?

No. Logma has no coaching and doesn't adjust your targets for you. It's a fast food log. If the weekly adjustments are what you value, MacroFactor does that and Logma doesn't.

How much does MacroFactor cost?

The US App Store lists MacroFactor monthly plans from $9.99 to $11.99, a semiannual plan at $47.99, annual plans from $59.99 to $71.99 and an annual bundle at $89.99. Logma is $9.99 a month or $49.99 a year.

Can I log exact grams in Logma?

Yes. Put the weight in the sentence, like "200 grams of chicken thigh", and the estimate works from it.

Does Logma have a barcode scanner?

No. Logma logs from what you say or type, with no scanner and no photo logging. If most of your food comes with a barcode, a scanning app may suit you better.

Is Logma available on Android?

Not yet. Logma is on iPhone now and needs iOS 17 or later. The Android version launches on November 14, 2026.
